Let the fun in with Padlet…

Hello my fellow friends!

It has been almost a week so if you see piles of dust all over the place, ignore them!

I’m back with an assignment for this week. I’ve created a “Padlet” on Freedom with a group of friends. Before i go in details with the project I would like to talk a bit about “Padlet” what is it and why we should use in an ESL classroom.

Padlet is creative to use in an English classroom as it allows you to create a digital cork board full of information. Padlet is also a great tool to collect so many things related to a certain topic in one place. It provides group work -as we did- and easy to access. I do believe that it’s one of the creative tools for 21st century learning as it motivates the students and allows them to share in different formats such as images, documents, videos etc. Nonetheless, teachers can track their students progress easily. I had fun using it, and i know that i will be using it for my classes in the future.

So back to the project! We were assigned to choose one of the two topics of which was freedom. We decided to create an informational, educational and fun padlet with mentioning key points of freedom from history to entertainment sector. Using a padlet to create this project actually helped as we put together so many elements in one board, easy to access and follow. It is as if the information on freedom in the internet is just gathered in one place.

I hope you enjoy viewing our padlet and can find some inspiration to use in your classrooms.

I would like to finish my post with a quote i like; “Padlet is nothing but a chance to be better… in your projects!” Just kidding!

“Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.”-Albert Camus

Wikibooks

Hello everyone!

I’m back with another post. I know what you’re thinking, and yes you’re right, I’m pretty quick. Jokes aside, this week our assignment in Instructional technologies and material design was to create a wiki page with a review of a book that we read.

I wanted to write a review on Yukio Mishima’s story called “The Sailor who Fell from Grace with the Sea.” It was a book that i had quality time with and writing a review on it was also a different experience. The review made me think one more time on the book and i realize now how deep the book was .

I hope you like it as well and start reading the book influenced by my wiki entry.

Thanks for reading!

Who will replace who?

“Any teacher that can be replaced by computers should be replaced by computers”. This quote of Asimov may seem like a nightmare for so many teachers around the World since the technology almost took over everything and entered the classrooms. Although as great as Isaac Asimov was, he was wrong about one thing in his quote, computers should not replace teachers but it should be the one of the most essential tool of teachers.

Nowadays the technology is an amazing tool to use in education, especially for learning languages.  It is undeniable that the technology turns teaching into a fun and creative process. Although so many teachers misunderstood the teaching with technology since they assumed that giving lectures with PowerPoint presentations as a use of technology, new methodologies erased this misconception by integrating technology into learning and putting emphasis on students’ use of technology.  The new generation was born to a world surrounded and developed by the power of technology so it is ignorant for teachers not to benefit from the technology when there are so many interesting and engaging devices such as VR glasses or ARs to use in the classrooms.

I love considering the technology as a way of seeing new horizons because it brings the world right in front of their door. An enormous source of information and shaping that information into something new with the help of a technological tool makes the learning more meaningful and consistent. Nevertheless it engages students and nurtures their creativity and their learning. Shooting short films, creating posters, making animations etc. motivate the students and encourage them. On the other hand the excessive use of technology may lead to some negative behaviour which we don’t want our students to have such as being too dependent on technology or being addicted to it. Teachers should be aware of this situation and use it effectively without going overboard.

I cannot deny the fact that no classroom should be left without the touch of technology in the 21st century. I, as a pre-service teacher would like to integrate technology in my teaching as I know how useful and fun it is for both students and teachers. I enjoyed creating visuals and I want my students to experience and learn the language through technology. In the end, I don’t want to be replaced by the computer when I have the chance to use it for my students. What about you? Are you going to be replaced by the computers or conquer them ?

A Full of Mystery Podcast

Hello everyone!

It has been a week since i posted on this blog. Today i’m going to post something that i had fun while creating.

As you may know, “A linguaphile’s Notes” was created as part of an assignment for “Instructional technologies and material design” lesson. Another task we had, was to create a podcast. I love listening to podcast and this time i was the storyteller, not the listener.

I wasn’t alone though. I’ve created the story and the podcast with my friend Murat. Don’t forget to check on him as well!

Without any further due, enjoy listening the podcast.

Thanks for listening!

“CALL” Me Maybe?

Hello my fellow audience,

It is such a great day to talk about an innovative learning as the 12th March is the birthday of the internet. It is hard to deny the need of technology in our lives as it facilitates everything around us. Since the technology started to develop, it affected the field of education as well.  The revolutionary teaching devices shook the whole foreign language world. So, what does “CALL” stand for? CALL is computer-assisted language learning that the teachers design and use in their foreign language classrooms.

Although the rise of CALL may seem to start in 1950’s, it actually occurred way before, in 1930s and mid ‘40s. I’m going to put a timeline on the historical development of CALL from behaviourism to Integrative CALL on this post. Don’t forget to take a look at it!

Thank you for spending time here 🙂

The learning of this century -The learning we need, the skills we need-

Hello my fellow audience,

There is nothing in this world that time has changed, including foreign language teaching. Era by era we’ve seen how our learning or teaching adapted to the circumstances we lived in. Unfortunately we’ve also continued with the same learning skills in different periods of time. But; educators, methodologists and teaching experts realised that we had to have learning and skills which belong to this century, the era we live in. Eventually, an innovative and creative learning which belong to 21st century was born.

21st century learning provides various skills for Ss to develop as they will be essential for their lives in the future and changes the way they learn.  21st century learning includes learning and innovation skills, ICT skills and life and career skills.  Learning and innovation skills are important in an English language classroom. These skills focused on 4 core points;

  • Critical Thinking Skills
  • Creativity
  • Communication
  • Collaboration

Students need all 4Cs to succeed in a foreign language classroom and to develop their communicative skills to speak easily with native speakers. Nonetheless, 21st century learning is learner-centred which also puts an emphasis on learner as “doer” or “creator”. Personalized, creative real world tasks make students use the language beyond the classroom as it is one of the purposes of 21st century learning.

21st Century Learning

I would love to finish my post with a quote from Sir Ken Robinson: “Our task is to educate their whole being so they can face the future. We may not see the future, but they will and our job is to help them make something out of it.”
